to play at any game of chance for stakes;
to stake or risk money, or anything of value on
the outcome of something involving chance;
to act on favourable hopes or assessment;
to lose or squander by betting;
to risk or venture;
any matter or thing involving risk or venture;
a venture in or as in gambling.
Gambling is usefully categorised into several
types:
lotteries, which are games of chance designed to
produce a random outcome;
gaming, which is a collective term for games
which involve a large element of chance, but
possibly also some element of skill on the part
of the player to reduce risk exposure and
increase the probability of winning; and
betting on events and outcomes over which either
the bettor has some influence, or in which the
bettor's choice is capable of being based on
some degree of more or less rational analysis.
In the physical world (or 'in real life' - IRL -
as netizens conventionally express it), gambling
occurs in a variety of settings:
small-scale, local events among pairs and groups
of individuals, ranging from social euchre,
'500' and bridge parties with a few dollars on
the outcome, via semi-social office football
polls, to those in which the primary purpose is
gambling, such as two-up rings, and all-night
poker parties in private homes. These events are
difficult to regulate, and even to locate;
occasional events run by organisations, such as
social club housie nights, tombolas at shows,
fairs and fetes, and raffles of chooks and
meat-trays at football matches. These may be
more amenable to regulation due to their
openness and hence visibility;
