Note that the figures relate to one quarter. The estimated regression
parameters are used in conjunction with
mean values of the explanatory variables (and fitted values of the dependent
variable) over parts of the sample
range appropriate to the chosen regions.
4.1.4 Preliminary conclusions
The analysis has been based on different types of regressions conducted at a
regional level
using net player losses per adult as the dependent variable, and the number
of gaming
machines, the number of clubs, and the number of hotels as the explanatory
variables
(regressors).
This is a smaller
proportionate effect than that obtained by us and the Productivity
Commission using
equations estimated from cross-sectional data only. According to statistical
theory, the result
shown here should be more robust given that it is based on time-series data.
The effect on net gaming expenditure in our study regions of the
introduction of new gaming
venues (clubs or hotels) is shown in Table 4.2. The estimates in the table
were found to be
significant at the 1 per cent level.
